Introduction to the World Wide Web

These exercises show you how to access the Internet using World Wide Web (WWW).  To “surf” the Web, you need to have access to a Web browser.  There are many web browsers.  You will be using the web browser Internet Explorer in the Pentium Lab.  The World Wide Web is made of documents that are linked to other documents.  The most common way of navigating the web is to click underlined text ( Often the text does not become underlined until your mouse pointer is moved over the colored link ).  You can accomplish this by putting the cursor over the underlined text ( or colored text ) and clicking it with the left button on the mouse.

Logging Onto The Pentiums:  First, you will want to login.  To Login, you must enter your user name and password.  Your user name and password are the same right now and are all lower case.  They both begin with your section number (i.e., d1 for 9:30 AM class, d2 for 11 AM class), followed by the first six letters of your last name.  If your last name is shorter than six letters, then use your whole last name (e.g., d1smith).

Starting Your Browser:  After logging in and windows starts, using the left button on your mouse, double click on the Internet Explorer icon on the desktop that looks like:

When Internet Explorer starts, what do you see?
