Physics 102 is an
introductory, conceptual oriented course with quantitative applications in
general physics with special emphasis placed on topics related to everyday
experience. Topics include motion, work,
energy, sound, heat, light, optics, electricity, magnetism, and some atomic and
nuclear physics. This is a introductory
course for students majoring in the physical sciences. This course is a prerequisite for Physics
121. The associated lab, physics 102L,
is required with this course. Physics
102 and Physics 102L satisfy the G.E. laboratory science requirement. The intent of this course is to introduce
basic physical laws and to develop the language in the physical sciences. The prerequisite is Math 107 and the skills
advisory are Math 140 and English 110.

Grading: Grades are based on 3 examinations, homework,
laboratories, and the final exam. Grades
will be based on your percentage of the possible total point distribution with
some curving. Grades will be posted on
the World Wide Web at www.cs.sbcc.edu/physics, then follow the links (Mike
Young ® Grades) or www.cs.sbcc.edu/physics/page/grades.htm Chapter homework assignments are due the
class meeting following the close of the chapter’s lecture.

Homework guidelines: 1. Homework more than one day late will lose
three points (20%).
2.
Homework more
than 2 weeks late will not be accepted.
3.
Put your name,
class, and date in the upper right hand corner.
4.
Label chapter
number on the top line.
5.
Clearly number
the problems in the left margin, otherwise do not write in the margins .
6.
If homework
problems are not done in numerical order, please note.
7.
Staple multiple
pages together and write as legibly as possible.
Videos: A complete collection of the physics videos, "The
Mechanical Universe" is available in the learning center. Viewing these videos is not required, but
recommended since they are very helpful and present the ideas in another
setting. Some of the videos are beyond
the scope of this class, but all the videos are helpful.
